Facts About Lenticulars

What does Lenticular mean?

Lenticular refers to a unique printing process that relies on a material composed of parallel rows of optical lenses that magnify and show to the human eye only a small portion of the image printed underneath. Images under each row of the lens are sliced up and interlaced in a controlled pattern, then printed at high resolution, creating an illusion of 3D, moving, or morphing images.

Are Lenticulars a type of hologram?

Holograms are produced by a completely different process. The end result is a shimmering 3D image on a thin plastic film, a feature seen on many credit cards and documents. Holograms are generally used for security purposes (because they are difficult to forge), but we are able to produce promotional holograms as well. Please contact us at 703.521.4843 or toll-free (800) 705.6735 for details.

Can I do a 3D effect?

Yes! 3D and image flip are the most common Lenticular effects. Other options include motion, morph, zoom and animation, which may require special lenses and careful art set-up. In some cases, it's even possible to combine 3D with another effect.

What are the differences between the lenses?

The standard lens used is the 18 mil/75-line lens, which can be used for all the effects listed above. For higher resolution, stunningly deeper 3D or more fluid motion, there are more specialized lenses (e.g. 23 or 27 mil), which can be much more expensive in small quantities, but go down in cost for larger production runs. We will advise you as to the most appropriate lens based on your artwork and desired use.

What kind of art do I need?

Specifications vary by effect. As a general rule, any art has to be high-resolution. For a basic two-flip effect, we may be able to use JPEG files, if high enough in quality. Motion and 3D require layered Photoshop files with bleeds and a particular sequence. For detailed art specs, please review our Lenticular design guide.

How are Lenticulars used?

The main reason to use Lenticulars is to attract attention and as a bonus, they are often saved and shown to others. When used as direct mail pieces, they have been shown to exponentially increase response rates. No other tangible medium can convey morphing, motion or 3D effects, and Lenticulars are the ideal way to show how devices operate or show transformations over time.

How much would it cost to produce just one Lenticular?

We specialize in offset production runs, which are generally meant for larger quantities. While this usually requires the production of a single proof, the set-up charge to get that single piece is several hundred dollars.

How long does production take?

Most production takes about 2–4 weeks from proof approval. In some cases, production in a week or less is available at an additional cost.

Testimonials

Lenticulars

"Dimension did what other Lenticular providers said could not be done, offered unparalleled customer service, delivered 4 days early and made my client very happy.
My client had a need for a custom lenticular business card. Not only was the lenticular design complex (5 layers vs. the usual three), he needed the cards in hand within 2 weeks for an important presentation. All the lenticular printers that I spoke with said that the job required 5 weeks and/or the job was too complex for them to produce. Right when I was about to tell my client that a lenticular card could not be produced in time for his meeting, I found Dimension Creative Promotions. Cliff and his team were able to produce our custom card in less than two weeks (project was delivered within 10 days!).
What made Dimension stand out from past printer experiences was more than them delivering ahead of schedule. Cliff and his team treated our project as if it was a large project, or even their only project, when in fact our project was a small run of 1000 business cards. Cliff made himself available during the entire production and pre-press processes, and gave us timely updates once the project had gone to press. His customer service is exceptional and because of that, he removed all of the stress from a job that otherwise would have been very stressful.
Bottom line: Dimension did what other printers said couldn't be done, offered unparalleled customer service, delivered 4 days early and made my client very happy."
